In-Person Events
NYSED OBEWL is sponsoring a two-day, in-person workshop in each of nine regions in New York State to support NYS world language educators to understand how to enact the NYS Culture Standards.Ìý All workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a one-hour lunch on your own.Ìý The workshop description for each day, as well as the locations and dates are listed below.Ìý Participants must commit to attending both days in full.Ìý Eight (8) hours of CTLE credit are offered.
Day 1:Ìý Enacting the NYS Culture Standards, Part 1 - When intercultural competence is developed alongside language proficiency, NYS world language students are positioned to become culturally responsive high school graduates. In Day 1 of this 2-day workshop, presenters will make evident the inextricable relationship between cultural and communicative literacies. They will share strategies for using authentic resources, images, and artifacts as sources of interpretation, cultural voice, and communicative context. After taking a close look at the language functions of the NYS Culture Standards 4 and 5 and associated assessment rubrics, participants will collaborate to map out an Interpretive instructional sequence that embeds the language functions of the Culture Standards.
Day 2:Ìý Enacting the NYS Culture Standards, Part 2 - Day 2 of this 2-day workshop will build on foundational understandings from the previous day. In this session, presenters will share strategies for prompting Interpersonal and Presentational Communication using the language functions of Culture Standards 4 and 5. They will also demonstrate ways to integrate these output tasks with the previously developed Interpretive instructional sequence. After taking a close look at the language functions of the NYS Culture Standards 4 and 5 and associated assessment rubrics, participants will collaborate to map out Interpersonal and Presentational tasks that align with the previously developed instructional sequence that embeds the language functions of the Culture Standards.

Registration process:Ìý All participants must pre-register for these workshops using the NYSED registration form.Ìý (Please note that using your school’s internal system, such as Frontline, does not register you for these workshops.)Ìý Once the registrant's email address has been verified as being from a New York State school, college, or university, an email confirming their registration will be sent.Ìý Pre-registration will close by Friday, June 26, 2026, or whenever the individual venues reach capacity; there will be no same-day registration.Ìý Only pre-registered attendees may attend and be eligible for a certificate documenting attendance and/or CTLE hours.Ìý
